How Do The MEATER Thermometers Work?
Now, let’s learn how the thermometer works with this MEATER Review wireless thermometer. Tests have shown that MEATER’s thermometer readings are highly accurate. We use a small high-resolution temperature sensor which is attached to an electronic readout device, creating a digital “food thermometer”.
- The Probe
A special stainless steel probe conveys the heat data from the location of the food being cooked or measured to the digital readout device via two insulated wires. The probe has several important characteristics: it is long enough to reach an internal food temperature of at least 86° Fahrenheit (30° Celsius), but not so long as to create a security hazard for anyone working with it; it carries an electric current safely up to 48 volts DC/AC @ 100mA max. It can be used in meat or water, and is designed to reach internal cooking temperatures of at least 392° Fahrenheit (200° Celsius).
- The Probe Tip
We provide an interchangeable tip with the MEATER Thermometer. This allows you to quickly change between probe tips for specific types of food or liquids. The current tip is a 12mm stainless steel meat thermometer that is custom made for us, but we plan on creating different ones in the future depending on our Kickstarter supporters’ needs. For example, one could be for measuring milk temperature when making cheese, another could be used as a candy/deep fryer thermometer, or simply make it easier to measure the temperature inside of cooked poultry.
- What Is At The End Of The Wire?
At the end of each wire attached to the probe is a small stainless steel connector that clips onto the readout device. The build and design of these connectors was carefully considered, as it needed to be secure enough to ensure there would not be any food or liquid leakage into the device, yet simple enough so as not to create a security hazard for anyone working with it.
- The Readout Device
The MEATER Thermometer uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology inside its digital readout device; this allows you to connect your smartphone wirelessly and accurately monitor the temperature of what you are cooking from up to 300 feet away or more! However, should you move out of range of your phone’s Bluetooth connection – no problem: there is an audible and visual alert that will remind you to reconnect your phone to the MEATER Thermometer. Fun fact: BLE works on a fraction of the power used by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and as such we were able to design it into our device without compromising battery life!
- The Temperature Sensor
The temperature sensor uses advanced semiconductor technology based on the principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer calculations that have been applied to food safety and cooking for over 100 years. This temperature sensor is accurate up to +/- 1° Fahrenheit. It is highly recommended that before starting any cooking process you calibrate your MEATER Thermometer with the provided calibration screwdriver. This will ensure that you can rely on and trust its readings and, in most cases, calibrating it once is typically enough for the life of the device (however we recommend doing so anytime you switch probe tips).
- The Readout Screen & App
When connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy, the screen displays information about what food or liquid is being measured. If there is more than one temperature reading (e.g., Meat – Tip 1 / Ambient Air), they will be displayed side by side on this screen. If there is only one temperature reading (e.g., Meat – Tip 1), it will display at the top-left corner and the bottom-left corner will display the device’s battery status. If your MEATER Thermometer is plugged in while using, it will also show charging information on this screen.
- The App
Each MEATER Thermometer comes with a free app that can be downloaded from either Apple or Google stores. It provides real-time temperature readings and charts of each probe tip (Tip 1 / Tip 2) during cooking, as well as alarms to remind you when certain parameters have been met (e.g., internal meat temperature of at least 135° Fahrenheit/57° Celsius for medium rare beef). The app also has a built-in timer to make measuring cooking times easier! In its current version, the app only displays temperature data sent from the digital readout device. However, in a future update we plan to have Bluetooth compatibility so that you can use the app directly from your smartphone’s lock screen without having to first open it and wait for an active connection.
What Makes The MEATER Different From Other Wireless Kitchen Devices?
The MEATER is different from other wireless food thermometers in that it has a standard AA-sized battery, as well as interchangeable probe tips. This makes it versatile and easy to use for just about anything you can cook up! Each tip’s temperature range is -58°F/-50°C to 572°F/300°C (-50°C/+300°F), allowing you to accurately measure the temperature of liquids (e.g., oil for deep frying) or solids (e.g., meat, candy). In addition, they are made from stainless steel with a PTFE coating, making them heat resistant and nonporous; this ensures they will not impart any unwanted flavors into your food.
How To Use The MEATER App?
While MEATER is cooking, you can track its temperature on the app. Just open it up and push the plus sign next to “MEATER” at the top of your screen. You’ll then see MEATER’s current temperature as well as how much time has elapsed since your last check-in.
If you’re not using your phone or tablet while cooking with MEATER, just plug it into a wall outlet wherever it’s convenient for you, and you’ll get an update every 30 seconds on app notifications. You can also check in on its temperature by clicking the “+” button again at any time.
If there isn’t an internet connection available (say if you’re out camping), MEATER will store information for eight hours before it needs to be plugged in.
If you leave your MEATER plugged in for over eight hours without using it, the app will notify you that its internal temperature has stopped changing. This doesn’t mean anything is wrong with the unit—it just means that, if you’re leaving it somewhere accessible, nothing bad will happen even if you don’t check on it regularly.
