What Is The Brisket?

Brisket is a cut of meat that has origins in the United States. It is cut from the breast or lower chest of beef cattle, usually sold with ribs attached. The brisket muscles include the subcutaneous fat known as “fat cap” which regulates its moisture during cooking.

This cut is typically made up of two parts: the “flat” cuts near the front of the cow and another thicker muscle called “point”. Brisket point goes through more processing than flat cuts to create what butchers call “first cut”, Brisket are sometimes divided into two categories by their shape, either rectangular (sometimes referred to as the first cut) or tapered (referred to as the second cut).

First-cut briskets are fattier and contain more marbling than the other. Second-cut briskets are leaner and have less fat marbling.

It is important to note that while a larger, untrimmed “packer” brisket has enough fat to be considered tasty for most who eat it, many choose to trim excess fat from this cut before cooking. The “flat” or first cut is preferred by some over the less tender, fattier second cut.

1) Leftover Brisket Hash and Eggs

If you’re looking for a go-to dish that’s quick to make then this is it! All you have to do is fry the leftover beef with potatoes, onion, garlic powder, cumin powder, paprika powder, and salt! I’d also recommend adding some black pepper and chili flakes if your diet allows it!

Ingredients:

Leftover Brisket—one cup;

Small potatoes—four to six pieces;

Onion—half a cup;

Garlic powder—a quarter teaspoon;

Cumin powder—a half teaspoon;

Paprika powder—1/4 teaspoon;

Salt and black pepper to taste. 

2) Brisket Enchiladas

This is a great Mexican dish that makes sure you don’t have any leftovers! In fact, it’s a perfect way of using up anything that’s leftover from a pot roast with some fresh ingredients.

What you’ll need:

Leftover Brisket—one cup;

Onion—half a cup, sliced thinly; 

Cilantro leaves—as desired;

Lime wedges—as desired. 

Directions: 

Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake the brisket for about 15 minutes with some salt and pepper to taste. Let it cool slightly before shredding it with your fork so that there aren’t too many large pieces in the mixture. Then add in onions and cilantro leaves before stirring well.

Next, add in some cheese and spoon the mixture into a tortilla before rolling it up. Finally, place the enchiladas on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and bake them at 350°F for 15 minutes or until cheese is fully melted! Serve with a slice of lime if desired.

I’d recommend adding some spices to the smoked brisket before preparing tacos. Even though the meat is already tasty, you can add some paprika powder, black pepper, chili flakes, and cumin powder!

Directions: 

Dice up your smoked beef into small cubes before stirring it in with onions and cabbage. Then season with salt, black pepper, chili flakes, and cumin powder before serving with tortillas! 

4) Brisket Soup

A hearty beef soup is a fantastic alternative for the dark and cold months, and it’s a simple way to use up any leftover meat.

This brisket soup is smothered in red wine and beef stock and presented with cheese dumplings and sauteed red onions. This dish is the epitome of winter comfort food.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Celery stalk—half a piece;

Carrots—three pieces; 

Potatoes—two pieces; 

Onion—a quarter cup, chopped finely; 

Garlic powder—a quarter teaspoon; 

Salt and black pepper to taste. 

Directions: 

Chop up your veggies before sautéing them in some olive oil for about 5 minutes or until onions are translucent. Then add in leftover smoked beef with some spices (salt, garlic powder) before stirring well. 

Next, pour enough water into the pot to cover all of the ingredients before bringing it to a boil. Reduce heat to let it simmer for around 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Finally, season with black pepper and salt before serving!

Combine everything well before placing the mixture on some buttered bread or tortilla wraps. Then toast until cheese is fully melted before enjoying this simple, yet flavorful sandwich. 7) BBQ Pizza

Yes, you can have pizza for dinner even when you’re a little low on ingredients! And this recipe is a great way to use up leftover beef brisket. It’s a fantastic, simple dish that will help you clean your fridge before the next grocery trip.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

BBQ Sauce. 

Directions: 

Use as much or as little bbq sauce as preferred before spreading onto a crust of choice! I recommend adding some cilantro leaves if desired before baking in an oven heated to 425°F until the cheese turns golden brown! Note that smoked beef should not be cooked too long since it tends to dry out very quickly. You should also try sprinkling some red pepper flakes for an added kick.

8) Burnt Ends

This is a fantastic recipe that lets you use everything in your fridge! And it requires almost no cooking and very little effort and time.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Onion slices—as desired;

Paprika—a quarter teaspoon;

Ground ginger powder—a quarter teaspoon;

Ketchup or BBQ sauce—a quarter cup. 

Directions: 

Bake leftover smoked beef for about an hour at 350°F before removing it from the oven and slicing it into cubes of the desired size. Slice up onions as well before putting them together with other ingredients (paprika, ground ginger) into a pan over medium heat. Stir continuously until burnt ends become coated with spices (and onions) before adding a quarter cup of ketchup or BBQ sauce. Cook until onions are fully caramelized before removing from heat and piling onto some buns!

9) Casserole

This is one of my favorite recipes because it’s really easy to make and you can actually freeze the leftovers!

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Carrots – three, cut into cubes;

Mushrooms- as many as desired (quartered);

Potatoes- two, cubed;

Onion- half a small onion, chopped; 

Celery stalks-three or four stalks, sliced up. 

Salt—a quarter teaspoon for everything before cooking. If desired, season with black pepper after cooking. 

Directions: Heat oil in a pan before sautéing onions until their soft brown. potatoes afterward, followed by carrots, celery, and mushrooms. Salt should be added before cooking since this helps flavors seep deeper into the dish. Note that you can add any other vegetables if desired—just make sure to cook them for a while first so they soften up! After everything is cooked, combine with smoked beef in a large bowl before pouring it all into an oven-safe dish (at 350°F). Sprinkle some cheese before baking until cheese melts along with casserole turning golden brown around its edges.

10) Spicy Beef Quesadillas

If you need a cheese fix, making quesadillas with brisket and the good stuff is a certain way to produce the perfect party meal.

They’re hearty, flavorful, and simple to make. Like any delicious leftovers dish, this one is easy to make.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Salsa – one tablespoon; 

Onion—one large, chopped. 

Quesadilla Wraps or Tortillas—as desired (at least two per person).

Directions: 

Brown onion in oil before adding smoked beef and salsa into the pan. Stir until heated through before stuffing wraps with this mixture before heating everything for about 5 to 10 minutes at 350°F. Finally, cut up quesadillas into triangles or squares of whatever shapes you prefer!

11) Slow Cooker Chili

This is a perfect dish for large gatherings and parties.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Ground beef – one pound, cooked;

Garlic cloves- as desired (quartered); 

Onion—two small onions, chopped; 

Green Peppers—as many as you want (at least two), chopped; 

Cayenne Pepper—a quarter teaspoon or more depending on your preference of spice level;

Salt and pepper to taste. 

Directions: 

Cook ground beef first before adding peppers, cayenne pepper, garlic, onion, salt and pepper into the slow cooker with it. Add smoked brisket before cooking everything at high heat for about four hours. Check up on the chili occasionally to stir everything, ensuring that it’s not burning. Add water if needed before adding more cayenne pepper and salt if desired. Continue cooking for another hour at high heat (or until heated through).

12) Brisket Shepherd’s Pie

Try this new take on an English classic for something truly different. This twist on the classic is often made with ground lamb, but it also works with brisket for something unusual that stands up to conventional recipes.

This dish incorporates leftover brisket, onions, and carrots, as well as a jalapeno cheddar cheese mash for added spice.

Ingredients:

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Carrots- two small carrots, diced; 

Mushrooms- as many as desired (quartered); 

Garlic cloves—as many as desired (quartered);

Sauté onions until soft before adding mushrooms and garlic into the pan with smoked brisket. Stir everything for about five minutes at medium heat before pouring in ground beef along with some salt and pepper to taste. Cook until heated through before transferring everything into an oven-safe dish. Cover the top with mashed potatoes before placing them in the oven for about 20 minutes at 350°F or until heated throughout. Add more salt and pepper if desired!

13) French Onion Brisket

This is a French twist on the barbecue that’s perfect for sandwiches the next day.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Red Onion—one large red onion, thinly sliced;

Swiss Cheese—as much as you want (shredded);

Salt and pepper to taste. 

Directions: 

Preheat oven to 425°F before layering leftover smoked brisket with cheese, onions, salt, and pepper between two slices of bread before placing in the oven for about 15 minutes or until the bread has crisped up. Flip over once halfway through the cooking process before removing from the oven when sandwiches are heated throughout. Slice into triangles or squares of whatever shapes you prefer! You can also try adding condiments such as mayonnaise or mustard for added flavor.

14) Brisket Stroganoff

This dish is a portion of classic comfort food with a twist.

Ingredients:

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup;

Carrots- three small carrots, chopped; 

Button Mushrooms—as many as you want (quartered); 

Red Onion—one red onion; 

Garlic cloves—two cloves (minced); 

Salted Butter – two tablespoons; 

Spices to taste including salt and pepper; 

Flour – one tablespoon; Whole Milk- one cup; Sour Cream- four tablespoons; or Half & Half if desired! ;

Egg Noodles for serving. 

Note: You can also use boxed potatoes in place of egg noodles if desired! 

Directions: 

Sauté carrots and onions until soft before adding garlic into the pan. Continue cooking on low heat for about five minutes. Stir in flour before slowly whisking in milk and sour cream while stirring constantly to avoid lumps from forming. Cook everything on medium-low heat until it begins to thicken up (about ten minutes). Add salt, pepper, and spices before adding leftover smoked brisket and mushrooms into the pan with noodles of choice (if using boxed potatoes, follow instructions on box)! Cook everything together at medium-high heat for another five minutes or until heated throughout. Serve immediately by topping each plate with a dollop of sour cream if desired!

15) Arepas

Arepas are a crime against humanity, yet they are the greatest comfort food. My own experience with South American cuisine has primarily been with chicken, but substituting brisket has proven to be a complete triumph.

Because you’ll need to create your own dough, this recipe may seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually rather simple. Take a chance!

Ingredients:

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup; 

Tomato paste- one tablespoon; 

Ground Red Pepper to taste (also known as cayenne pepper); 

Salt and pepper to taste; 

Coconut oil or butter – one tablespoon; 

Onion – 1 small onion, finely chopped; 

Garlic Cloves—two cloves (minced); 

Water—a cup and a half; 

Rice flour for pre-made dough or cornmeal for making dough from scratch. 

Note: You can use 2 cups of cooked rice in place of the other ingredients if desired! The result will be very similar to carnitas.

Directions: 

After chopping up your onion and garlic, take the leftover smoked brisket out of the refrigerator and set it on the kitchen counter while still inside its foil tray. Chop the meat into small pieces before throwing everything into a large pot over medium heat (after adding coconut oil or butter). Add some salt and pepper to taste as well as red pepper flakes before covering with water and stirring constantly until everything begins boiling. Keep on high heat until boiling before reducing to low heat for about an hour. Set aside when the meat is tender enough to fall apart. For the pre-made dough, take two cups of rice flour and add salt before slowly adding water while mixing everything together with a wooden spoon until it becomes doughy (should be sticky). Make small patties out of the dough before heating up coconut oil or butter in a frying pan on medium heat. Fry each side of your arepa for about five minutes before transferring them over to aluminum foil paper and serving!

16) Leftovers Cottage Pie

This is an extremely old-fashioned recipe, but it’s also one of the most delicious. 

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup; 

Instant Mashed Potatoes with vegetable oil added – one package; 

Carrots- three carrots (chopped); 

Button Mushrooms—as many as you want (quartered); 

Garlic Cloves—two cloves (minced); Salted Butter – two tablespoons; Onion Salt to taste; Ground Black Pepper to taste; Parsley Flakes to taste (optional);

Heavy Whipping Cream – 1/2 cup. Note: You can use whole or low-fat milk if desired.

Directions: 

Boil carrots until tender before adding them to a large bowl with leftover brisket and mushrooms (quartered). Melt two tablespoons of salted butter in a frying pan on medium heat before adding minced garlic and onion salt to taste. Cook for about five minutes or until everything has browned up before slowly pouring in half a cup of heavy whipping cream while stirring constantly. Add pepper and parsley flakes if desired, then reduce the mixture until thickened. In a baking dish, begin layering mashed potatoes before topping with your mushroom/carrot/brisket mixture from earlier! Finish by covering the entire top layer with more mashed potatoes along with some small dices of salted butter if desired! Bake at 350 degrees for forty minutes or until the mashed potatoes begin to brown.

17) BBQ Brisket Twice-Baked Potatoes

Bacon pieces and sour cream suddenly sound so unappealing. Roasted Russets with buttery, chive-dappled mashed potatoes, cheese, and meat are anything from boring.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket—one cup; 

Unsalted Butter – one tablespoon; 

Cream Cheese – one small package softened in the microwave for thirty seconds or so before adding milk to soften further if needed. 

Heavy Whipping Cream – two cups. 

Salt & Pepper to taste; 

Parsley Flakes to taste (optional); 

Shallot Salt to taste (also optional); 

Green Onions- one cup chopped (optional).

Directions: 

Take the bacon pieces from earlier and chop them up before setting them aside. In a large bowl, take leftover smoked brisket and break it apart before adding two cups of heavy whipping cream as well as some salt & pepper to taste. In a separate bowl, combine softened cream cheese with unsalted butter as well as milk until smooth (add more milk if necessary for desired consistency). 

Once everything is relatively well mixed together, begin layering potatoes with your mixture in an oven-safe dish, potato>cream cheese/butter mix>meat>salt & pepper mix>bacon bits. Cover top layer generously with shredded cheddar before baking at 350 degrees for thirty minutes. Remove foil after that and bake for another fifteen minutes or until golden brown! Once out of the oven, top with chopped green onions and parsley flakes if desired.

18) Slow-Cooked Shredded Beef Ragu Pasta

This is a recipe for a classic ragu consisting of a slow-cooked, seasoned beef with tomatoes and red wine. It’s great when served over pasta or polenta—and it makes the kitchen smell absolutely fantastic when cooking! 

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket – one cup; 

Onion – one small onion (chopped); 

Garlic Cloves – three cloves (minced); 

Unsalted Butter – two tablespoons; 

Tomato Paste- one tablespoon; 

Dried Oregano-one teaspoon; 

Dried Basil-one teaspoon; 

Red Pepper Flakes to taste (optional); 

Salt & Pepper to taste; 

Fresh Parsley Leaves for garnishing. 

Directions: 

In a large pot, sauté chopped onions and minced garlic with two tablespoons of unsalted butter until browned. Add one cup of smoked brisket from earlier as well as red pepper flakes if desired before adding some salt & pepper to taste along with dried oregano and basil. Once everything is relatively well mixed together, pour in one can (14.5 ounces) of whole peeled tomatoes that have been coarsely crushed by your hands along with the juices! 

Next up, add an additional three cups of water before bringing this mixture to a boil before reducing it to low heat so it simmers for at least three hours or more depending on how much time you have available. Once simmering, begin cooking pasta according to the package before draining it and adding it to your ragu along with some fresh parsley leaves for garnishing!

19) Slow-Cooked Beef Ragu

The most basic of all ragu recipes consisting of tomatoes, onions, garlic & red wine cooked for hours until the beef is super tender. 

Ingredients: 

Unsalted Butter – one tablespoon; 

Onion – one small onion (chopped); 

Garlic Cloves – two cloves (minced); 

Tomato Paste-one tablespoon; 

Dried Oregano-one teaspoon; 

Dried Basil-one teaspoon; 

Red Pepper Flakes to taste (optional); 

Salt & Pepper to taste; 

Fresh Parsley Leaves for garnishing. 

Leftover Smoked Brisket – one cup.

Directions: 

Melt unsalted butter in a large pot before adding chopped onions and minced garlic along with salt & pepper to taste. Saute until browned then add one tablespoon of tomato paste along with red pepper flakes if using. Add some dried oregano and basil while also stirring in leftover smoked brisket pieces from earlier and water (to desired consistency). Bring this mixture to a boil before reducing it to low heat so it simmers for at least three hours or more depending on how much time you have available. 

Once simmering, begin cooking pasta according to the package before draining it and serving on individual plates. Top each plate with a generous amount of sauce before garnishing with parsley leaves!

20) Spicy Brisket Baked Beans

A Texas & Southern staple consisting of slow-cooked baked beans with tomato sauce, brown sugar and plenty of spices for a little heat.

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket – one cup; 

Pinto Beans (drained) – two cups; 

Onion (diced) – half (one whole); 

Garlic Cloves (minced) – two cloves; 

Ketchup-1/4 cup; 

Light Brown Sugar- 1/3 cup; 

Honey-2 tbsp.; 

Worcestershire Sauce- 2 tbsp.; 

Yellow Mustard- 1 tbsp.; 

Diced Green Chiles (optional)- one can; 

Ground Cumin – one teaspoon; 

Cayenne Pepper to taste.

Directions: 

In a large pot, cook chopped onions and minced garlic in some oil until browned before adding ground cumin and cayenne pepper along with salt & pepper to taste. Add ketchup, light brown sugar, and honey before mixing it together well as well as stirring in two cups of drained pinto beans! Cook on low heat for at least three hours or more depending on how much time you have available. 

After simmering, begin cooking pasta according to the package before draining it and mixing it into your baked beans. Add in some diced green chiles if desired before bringing it back to a boil for at least five minutes before serving on individual plates! 

21) Whole30 Braised Brisket

A super easy Whole30 dinner that requires minimal effort consisting of beef brisket cooked in tomato sauce along with all sorts of vegetables!

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket – one cup; 

Cauliflower (roughly chopped) – two cups; 

Bell Pepper (sliced) – half (one whole); 

Tomato Sauce- six ounces; 

Onion (diced) – half (one whole); 

Garlic Cloves (minced)- two cloves; 

Rosemary Leaves- 2 tbsp.; 

Basil Leaves-2 tbsp.; 

Oregano Leaves-1 tsp. ; 

Red Pepper Flakes to taste; 

Salt & Pepper to taste; 

Leftover Mashed Cauliflower – one cup.

Directions: 

Begin by adding all of your ingredients into a slow cooker after mixing in leftover mashed cauliflower and stirring well before setting it on low heat for at least three hours (or more depending on how much time you have available). Once simmering, begin cooking pasta according to the package before draining it and serving with extra sauce! 

22) Cheesy Mushroom Quesadillas

A Tex-Mex inspired dish consisting of beef brisket, mozzarella cheese and sautéed mushrooms in between two flour tortillas. 

Ingredients: 

Leftover Smoked Brisket (shredded) – one cup; 

Shiitake Mushrooms (sliced)-one cup; 

Tomato Sauce- six ounces; 

Mozzarella Cheese- 1/2 cup; 

Onion (diced) – half (one whole); 

Green Pepper (sliced) – one whole; 

Garlic Cloves (minced)- two cloves. 

Cheese Sauce Ingredients: Butter- two tablespoons; Flour- two tablespoons; Milk-1 1/2 cups; Cheddar Cheese- one cup.

Directions: 

Begin by sautéing sliced mushrooms and onion together in a pan before adding tomato sauce along with some garlic cloves and seasonings. When simmering, begin making your cheese sauce by melting two tablespoons of butter over low heat before stirring in two tablespoons of flour to make a roux as well as gradually adding milk while mixing well. Once mixed, you can now add grated cheddar cheese into the mixture as it continues heating up on low heat until all of the cheese has melted well. 

Finally, add shredded brisket into the mushroom & onion mix before assembling two tortillas together with shredded mozzarella cheese in between them! Continue cooking for at least five minutes on each side or until both sides are golden brown before serving warm.

What Are Some Ways To Cook Brisket?

Stovetop: 

For the quickest method, you can simply season your brisket before cooking it in a pot or pan using oil. You may also add some beef broth, onion, and/or garlic for extra flavor if desired. 

Slow Cooker: 

To prepare this method, you’ll need to season your brisket with salt & pepper before adding it over with diced onions & garlic. Afterward, add enough beef stock so all of the meat is submerged before putting on the lid and setting on low heat for about four hours (or more). Finished! 

Oven: 

Seasoning and preparation remain almost identical but instead of using a slow cooker; place it into an oven-safe dish along with enough beef stock so that all of the meat is submerged. Cover it with foil before baking in the oven at 325 degrees for about four hours.

Grill: 

One can also cook a brisket over a grill by adding some oil to a pot along with enough beef broth so that it completely covers the meat. Season well with salt & pepper before placing on the grill and cooking for several hours until tender using indirect heat/briquettes (so coals are on one side of the grill, leaving an empty side).

Instant Pot: 

Season your brisket; then add quinoa flour (can substitute arrowroot powder but may not taste as great), water, and stock cubes into your instant pot before stirring until combined nicely.
